Ron DeSantis’s secy suspended from Twitter for harassing AP journalist

The war between The Associated Press and Republican Florida Governor Ron DeSantis escalated Friday when the news agency accused its spokesman of “harassing behavior” and activating an “online mob” against a reporter for his story. About the Governor’s Promotion of a COVID Antibody Drug. .

The extraordinary letter from incoming AP executive director Daisy Veerasingham accused DeSantis press secretary Christina Pushaw of inciting an online mob against AP reporter Brendan Farrington, about her article titled “The Top Donor of DeSantis Invests In Governor COVID Drug Promotions “. She recapped her story-tearing tweets using terms like “drag ’em” and “blast’ em,” with the AP characterizing them as a direct threat to Farrington.

“While we may disagree on the stories, it is unacceptable and dangerous for a public official to encourage systemic harassment of journalists,” Veerasingham wrote. Pushaw said the AP was trying to distract itself from the “linchpin” of hers, which was widely criticized.

“No one from our office threatened him,” Pushaw told Fox News. “His story drew harsh criticism because it was false and discouraged people from seeking life-saving treatment. Instead of acknowledging that and retracting his hit piece, the AP doubled down and tried to make the story about the backlash that received the reporter. ”

When Farrington, who has now protected his Twitter account, first said Wednesday that he faced threats from the story, Pushaw said DeSantis’s office did not approve of them. The AP article reported on DeSantis’ push for Floridians with coronavirus to take a monoclonal antibody treatment developed by Regeneron, in which a major DeSantis donor company has invested millions.

However, the AP also recognized that the drug is highly effective and has also been touted by the Biden administration. The story also noted that DeSantis donor hedge fund Citadel had a smaller stake in Regeneron than BlackRock, which has donated more to Democrats, and that Citadel’s investment in Regeneron “is a small fraction of its $ 39,000. million in total investments “.

The story was criticized by Pushaw, conservatives, and even some liberals who disagreed with its framing. A Florida newspaper editor even tweeted that he was a strong critic of DeSantis, a possible Republican contender for the White House in 2024, but called the story weak.

“Yes, we’ve been very critical of DeSantis on the Sun Sentinel Editorial Board, but this story of ‘DeSantis is selling monoclonal antibodies to make money for a donor’ doesn’t add up,” Sun Sentinel’s Dan Sweeney tweeted. .

Yeah, we've been pretty big critics of DeSantis on the Sun Sentinel Editorial Board, but this "DeSantis is hawking monoclonal antibodies to make a buck for a donor" story doesn't really add up.

That said, I do wish he'd have spent as much time hawking vaccines a few months ago. https://t.co/mG2x5qk9Ja

Pushaw said Friday that she was particularly upset by the story because she felt the AP had politicized a public health problem and called the letter a departure from criticism that has outgrown the story.

“They were caught publishing misinformation that could endanger the lives of Floridians by making them mistrust life-saving treatment … about a governor they decided they don’t like,” she said. “They called them in part because of me, in part because the story was so obviously wrong … They provoked it by posting this kind of dangerous misinformation.”

She added that she deleted the tweet that said “Drag them” over the AP tweet from her original story after Farrington told her that she had started receiving threats. She added that she was not trying to cover her trail by deleting her old tweets, and she did not tolerate any threats against the reporter and urged him to alert the police.

In response to Fox News, an AP spokesperson said “the letter speaks for itself” and reiterated that the news agency “supports the story. On Friday night, Pushaw’s Twitter account was hit with a suspension of 12 hours for allegedly violating her Pushaw told Fox News that Twitter never pointed to the specific tweets that got her in trouble.

“Will you ban the press secretary of a democratically elected official while allowing the Taliban to live-tweet their conquest of Afghanistan?” Pushaw reacted in a statement to Fox News. “This shows that Governor DeSantis is right, again. Those who challenge false narratives are often overly silenced by corporate media and big-tech collusion.”

A Twitter spokesperson confirmed Pushaw’s suspension. When asked by Fox News which tweets violated Twitter policy, the spokesperson responded, “We have nothing to share beyond the statement, thank you.”
